Ryan and Amy’s story is a true classic. A tale fit for any rom-com, fairytale or epic romantic saga! It began in 2002 when Amy asked Ryan to their high school freshman winter formal dance. The details of the asking remain in dispute (Amy remembers it being over the phone while Ryan remembers it being at a football game!) but without question it is the pivotal event to their happily ever after story.
They remained friends throughout high school and even had a sprinkle of delectable teenage drama including a runaway date (Amy), a drive-in movie cuddle session (Ryan), Amy’s not-so-secret crush on Ryan, and Ryan’s grand parking lot rescue that led to our first kiss!
After the “Best Kiss Ever” (according to Amy’s journal) they parted ways to live their lives; and other than a fleeting conversation and picture at their 10-year high school reunion it was 13 YEARS before they reconnected!
Fast forward to Summer 2019 and the fateful night Amy came across the unquestionably adorable “prom picture” from their high school winter formal dance and decided on a whim to send it to the only “Ryan” (no last name) listed in her phone. The stars aligned when (the correct) Ryan responded, still having the same phone number from 13 years earlier! They talked (aka. Texted) for hours discovering both were single, enjoyed sassy banter, and despite living on opposite sides of the country would both be in San Francisco just 10 days later. Ryan and Amy both felt an instant reconnection; Ryan was drawn to Amy’s high energy she was taken by his wit and impeccable manners. They parted ways amazed that “He/She Talks More Than I Do!” (which, if you know either of them, is no small feat) and wondering when they could see each other again.
The next 12 months were a whirlwind of cross-country flights, weddings, family vacations, and declarations of love. Then ‘RONA’ struck the world and despite the fact Amy was in daily contact with sick patients, Ryan chose to lockdown with her in Cincinnati so she wouldn’t be alone. It was an unexpected and irreplicable gift that sealed the deal for Amy.
In the Summer of 2020, Ryan & Amy relocated to San Diego, settling a few blocks from their old highschool! Socially constrained by Rona and looking for new activities, Amy discovered the Adventure Challenge - a ‘scratch-off’ book full of fun and unique dates. The scratch-off dates became a quarantine staple with surprise activities ranging from blind-folded water balloon fights to painting each other’s self-portraits.
(Yes, this is relevant to our story)
On December 30th 2020, while driving to Mammoth, Ryan convinced Amy it was the perfect day for a ‘scratch off’ date. Having rigged their date selection process, Ryan and Amy ended their drive in an empty parking lot at the base of Mammoth Mountain dancing in the headlights of Amy’s CR-V. Somewhere between Usher’s Yeah and Dan + Shay’s 10,000 Hours (their song), Ryan got on one knee and asked Amy if she would put up with him for the rest of their life.
Exactly 365 days after their first “I Love You”, Amy agreed to put up with Ryan forevermore.
